Oxbridge Lane Primary School is proud to have physical exercise and sports at the heart of our ethos. We value the importance of sport for both physical and emotional well-being while understand the joy of being competitive but also the basic life skills that being active and leading a healthy lifestyle can offer. We aim for all our pupils to have a positive and active lifestyle which helps them to achieve their Active 60 minutes per day.

We follow the School Games Marks values of: Teamwork, Honesty, Determination, Self-Belief, Passion, Respect and Leadership. These School Games Marks help us underpin our P.E. curriculum. We are currently a Gold standard school. By expecting our children to have the highest sporting values we ensure that they are ready for the next stage of their learning from EYFS to KS1, KS1 to KS2 and KS2 into their next learning journey.

Being part of the Stockton Schools Sports Partnership (SSSP) is a fundamental part of Oxbridge Lane Primary School; working together with SSSP to help improve and develop our provision of Physical Education and School Sport. We value the experiences that pupils gain from attending sporting competitions and festivals and we make it a priority that all pupils attend at least one sporting activity per year with the aim of encouraging and nurturing a love of being active and which fosters a lifelong love sport.

In addition to sporting visits, we aim to bring sporting excellence to school by offering a range of ‘taster sessions from outside providers. Recently, we have had ‘taster sessions’ from the likes of Durham County Cricket Club, and Tri Golf. We also had an Olympian visit school to inspire the children and to promote a healthy and active lifestyle. As part of this visit children we asked to take part in a sponsored fitness circuit course. Children from Reception to Year 6 raised an incredible £1949 which has been used to purchase sporting equipment to make our P.E. sessions fully active. Some of the proceeds have also been used to ensure our playtimes and lunchtimes are as active as possible.

Our teachers receive continued professional development to ensure our pupils access the best possible P.E. sessions. Teachers are supported by specialised outside P.E. providers such as gymnastics, dance, swimming and cricket coaches. We are dedicated to deliver a high-quality P.E. curriculum and we are supported by an array of coaching experience. These skilled coaches work with school staff to equip them with the knowledge, skills and confidence to deliver excellent lessons that are fun and engaging for all.

Throughout the academic year, children from all stages of the school attend are range of Sporting Festivals, Tournaments and Competitions. During this current academic year, we have attended 21 competitions or sporting festivals and have at least a further 11 booked in for the Summer Term. In addition to this we offer all our Year 4, 5 and 6 pupils a two-week swimming block of swimming each year. No matter the experience, confidence or skill level all of our pupils are able to represent their school in a variety of venues and in a range of sports they may not have otherwise had access to. As well as this, we conduct ‘Physical Challenges’ where pupils challenge themselves to improve their scores in a fun sporting activity such as skipping or hula-hooping over a period of a week. We try to use activities which children can easily participate in at home to further develop the love of being active outside of the school environment.

In addition to our range of sporting events our pupils are encouraged to be active throughout their school day starting with fun sporting activities in our Breakfast Club, active play and lunchtimes and a range of After School Clubs. After School Clubs include gymnastics and dance run by our expert coaches. Staff also run rugby, athletics, girls’ football, cheerleading, yoga/wellbeing clubs. These clubs are always very popular and our DanceFuzion dancers recently performed at the Arc to hundreds of delighted parents!

We fully encourage and offer support to our pupil’s families by offering advice on physical activities. We provide information on sporting events and clubs which run outside of school during the week, at weekends or in the school holidays. For example, we have been able to offer families free tickets to Teesside Lions basketball matches and free golf taster days. We also send activity ideas home with children in the form of homework activities. We will be working with Durham County Cricket Club on their ‘Chance to Shine’ project to promote wellbeing through cricket. As well as this, Oxbridge pupils will be piloting a 'Get Active Together' family engagement project, along with the Stockton Schools Sports Partnership, which incorporates ‘Active 60 Bags’ that go home with children on a Friday to enable families to be active together at home.
